Sibling Bonds

On Sunday our journey brought us into the world of the Plateaus. We followed river basins while canyons of varied red, rose around us.

The rock formations balanced precariously along the edge of the highway.

For hours no human habitations were to be seen until the green trees gave hints of water and then the promise of towns gave fruit. Slowly we increased in altitude as we came alongside the Rocky Mountains on on our way to the mountains of Denver where my brother owns a cabin, or more truthfully, a chalet.
How are we handling hours in our car? We finished "In the Garden of the Beasts" and started a Bill Bryson book called "At Home". This is a history of domesticity and how we developed home life. Haven't you ever wondered why we use salt and pepper instead of cardamom and powered basil? I listen for a while then start typing on my I-Pad, followed by snacking on apples and cashews, which leads back to catching a really interesting bit of trivia of the history of the entrance hall. Intermittently I follow along on the map noting what lies ahead, shortly, and how far until we stop to embrace more beloved family.
The highway from Vail, CO. to the cabin is congested and we are reduced to 10 miles an hour. The traffic is stealing several hours from seeing my brother and I feel cheated. But, the air is clear and we are finally away from wild fires, although Colorado has a some burning.
After getting lost in Central City, a mining, gambling town, we finally found the cabin, passing Kathy on the way, who was obviously looking for us.

The cabin is on land surrounding a little lake and life is quiet, perfect for a ending a day of driving.
We talk into the night and sleep well in the cool mountain air.

This morning we say goodbye and take the long southern highway towards Texas, where we will visit Mark's hometown. The weather is overcast and portends a possible thunder shower. The southwest needs rain, for sure.

Traveling with my best friend is very satisfying and comfortable.
